Parliament has demanded that the Minister of Energy and Power Development, July Moyo, deliver a ministerial statement following a significant spike in fuel costs in Zimbabwe.
On Wednesday, the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) announced new fuel tariffs, increasing diesel to US$2.05 per litre and petrol to US$2.17 per litre. The price hike comes amid the ongoing Middle East conflict, which has pushed global oil prices to nearly US$120 per barrel.
Regional Comparison Sparks Concern
Speaking in the National Assembly on Thursday, Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) legislator Caston Matewu highlighted that Zimbabwe’s fuel prices are considerably higher than those of neighbouring countries. Zimbabwe Fuel Costs Among Highest in the Region – MPs Demand Clarity From Energy Minister
Matewu noted:
“The average increase in fuel across the SADC region between January and now is around 5%, but Zimbabwe’s increase is almost 40%. This is a massive discrepancy compared to the region.”
Impact on Citizens and Transport
Economists warn that the spike in Zimbabwe fuel prices will push up the cost of basic commodities, directly affecting citizens’ daily expenses. Transport operators have already doubled fares in response to the new fuel costs, further straining household budgets.
Matewu urged that Minister July Moyo appear before Parliament to explain why Zimbabwe fuel costs remain higher than regional averages.
“We ask for an urgent Ministerial Statement by the Minister of Energy and Power Development to inform the House why our fuel is so expensive and why the increase in Zimbabwe is greater than anywhere else,” said Matewu.
Conclusion
The recent ZERA fuel increase highlights the pressures on Zimbabwe’s energy sector caused by international oil market instability. Citizens and transport operators alike are feeling the financial impact, and Parliament is seeking accountability and clarity from government officials.
